How these came to exist

These started as rock sliders. Brian Lau — known in the van community as @more.van.ever , didn’t need side steps. He wanted to actually off-road his Sprinter. Full send, side-of-a-mountain, slide-on-rock capable sliders that could hold a 12,000 lb van without catching an edge and trapping it. Dennis built them in steel. Heavy, indestructible, purpose-built.

Most Sprinter owners aren’t doing that. But the bones of that design ; the tube with the plate underneath, engineered so rocks slide past rather than catch, became the V1 Side Step. Same geometry. A fraction of the weight. Built for people who want what that design represents, even if they never touch a rock face.

Engineering detail

Ground Clearance

The steps drop only 2-¾” below the pinch seam. That’s intentional. The goal was a step that disappears underneath the van until you need it. If it does make contact with terrain, the geometry is designed to shed obstacles rather than collect them. Competitors run brackets that extend further down and present more surface area to the ground. Ours don’t.

Bracket Design

Minimal by design. No aggressive edges. No geometry that hangs low and invites a rock or branch to grab it. If you’re running a lift and larger tires, your actual ground clearance will vary but the steps themselves are doing everything possible not to be the limiting factor.

Construction

6061-T6 aluminum throughout. TIG welded in-house by Dennis. Powder coated to the same spec as every rack we produce.
